User Guide

Padflux reference manual for performers.

1. Introduction

Screen Layout

On smartphone, the screen is arranged vertically: XY pad at top, controls below.

Smartphone screen layout

On PC, the screen uses a 3-column layout: left controls, center XY pad, right controls.

PC screen layout

XY Pad — The main performance area. Touch or click and drag to play. X-axis = pitch (left low, right high). Y-axis = assignable parameter.

Controls — FX mode selector, waveform selector, effect sliders, ARP/CHD/SUB/PED toggles, KEY/SCALE/BASE selectors.

Settings (gear icon) — MIDI configuration, data export/import, license activation.

Key Concepts

FX Mode — Determines the sound engine: SYNTH, NOISE, S.SAW, or RISER. Each mode has different XY pad behavior.

Tier — Padflux offers three tiers: FREE (core features), Sound pack (all sounds), Pro pack (MIDI + recording). Locked features show a lock icon.

Preset — A saved snapshot of all your settings (FX mode, waveform, effects, ARP, etc.). Load instantly with a single tap.

Getting Ready

Open padflux.com/synth in your browser.

Tap "TAP TO START" on the overlay to begin.

Add to Home Screen

iPhone — Safari → Share → "Add to Home Screen". Runs in full-screen with no browser bars.

Android — Chrome → Menu → "Add to Home screen".

PC — Open in Chrome or Edge.

2. Playing

Playing the XY Pad

Touch (or click) anywhere on the XY pad to produce sound.

Move horizontally to change pitch. Move vertically to control the Y-axis parameter (default: volume).

Release to stop the sound. The pad responds to continuous movement while held.

Changing the Key

Tap the KEY display to open the piano keyboard.

Select a root note (C through B). The pad grid and note labels update immediately.

Changing the Scale

Tap SCALE to cycle through: Minor, Major, Pentatonic, Chromatic, Dorian, Whole Tone.

The scale determines which notes the X-axis snaps to.

Adjusting Octave & Range

BASE sets the starting octave (1–6).

RANGE controls how many octaves the pad spans. A wider range covers more notes but reduces precision per note.

3. Changing Sounds

Selecting an FX Mode

FX mode selector
SYNTHFREE

Classic synthesizer with 8 selectable waveforms. Y-axis is assignable (VOL, FLT, LFO, D.TM, REV, DLY).

NOISEFREE

Noise generator with resonant filter. Choose noise type (White/Pink/Brown) and filter (BP/HP/LP). Y = resonance.

S.SAWSound

7 detuned sawtooth oscillators for thick pads and leads. Y = spread (detune width).

RISERSound

Oscillator + noise blend for builds and transitions. Y = rise intensity. Adjust the MIX bar for OSC/NOISE balance.

Selecting a Waveform

FREESound

In SYNTH mode, tap the waveform selector to choose: SIN, TRI, SAW, SQR, ORG, BRS, BEL, WRM.

Each waveform has a distinct character — from smooth sine to bright square to warm pad tones.

Adjusting Effects

FREESound

Use the sliders to adjust: Decay (note length), Reverb (space), Delay (echo), Filter (brightness), LFO (modulation), Glide (pitch slide).

In SYNTH mode, the Y-axis can be reassigned to any of these effects for real-time control while playing.

Effect sliders

Changing the Y-Axis Assignment

Tap the Y-axis label on the XY pad to cycle through available assignments.

Each FX mode has different Y-axis options. S.SAW is fixed to SPREAD, RISER to RISE.

4. Using the Arpeggiator

Turning ARP On/Off

FREE

Tap ARP to toggle. When active, holding the pad generates a rhythmic sequence of notes.

Selecting a Pattern

Swipe ARP to choose: UP (ascending), DN (descending), RND (random).

Setting BPM & Swing

Adjust BPM (40–300) to set the arpeggiator speed.

Swing adds a shuffle feel. 50 = straight, higher = more swing.

Step Division & Octave Range

Step division controls note density (shorter divisions = faster notes).

Octave range sets how many octaves the arpeggio spans.

5. Chord, Sub Bass & Pedal

Using Chord (CHD)

FREE

Tap CHD to toggle chords on/off. Swipe to select voicing: 5th, tri, 7th, 9th.

Chords are built diatonically from the current scale and key — every position on the pad produces a musically correct chord.

Combine with ARP for chord arpeggios.

Using Sub Bass (SUB)

FREESound

Tap SUB to add a sub-oscillator one octave below the played note.

DEEP mode adds a second sub-oscillator two octaves below for heavier bass.

Using Pedal (PED)

Sound

FULL — Sustains all notes after release, like a piano sustain pedal.

SPLIT — Sustains only notes played on the left half of the pad. The right half plays normally.

6. Using Presets

Loading a Preset

SoundPro

Tap a preset slot in the preset bar to instantly load all saved settings.

Saving a Preset

Long-press an empty slot (or an existing preset) to save your current settings.

A dialog appears to confirm or edit the preset name.

Export & Import

Pro

Settings → Data → Export saves all presets and MIDI assignments as a JSON file.

Import on another device to transfer your sounds.

7. Using MIDI

MIDI features require Pro pack. Available on PC (Chrome / Edge).

Connecting a MIDI Device

Pro

Open Settings → MIDI. Available MIDI ports are listed automatically.

Select your device to connect. MIDI requires HTTPS or localhost.

MIDI OUT — Controlling External Instruments

Padflux sends Note On/Off, CC messages, all chord notes, and ARP steps to connected MIDI devices.

Use the VOL slider to blend internal sound and MIDI output for layered performances.

MIDI IN — Using a Controller

Assign any MIDI CC to a Padflux parameter via the Assign panel.

Learn mode: tap Learn, move a knob on your controller, and Padflux auto-maps it. Channel is detected automatically.

BPM SYNC — Syncing with a DAW

When receiving MIDI Clock, the arpeggiator tempo locks to the external source automatically.
